Film Director

Film directors are involved throughout the film process. During the pre production they have to make decisions such as the cast, crew and locations for the film. They will be responsible for the types of camera angles which are used, the lighting, sound and the special effects. But in some case the director will take the resonsibilty of a couple of roles such as the writer or the producer.

During the post production the director will play a key role as they work with the editors very closely to make sure that the edited sequence so they capture the emotion on the actors faces and that each camera angle is used effectively. The director will be judged on there creativity and the ability to run a production.

Having work experience in film or TV making will improve your knowledge of how the industry works and there for you will have a better chance of breaking into the industry and get a job so you can work your way up.

A film director will generally earn around 7% of the final budget so the director will earn £10 000 a week but you need to have years of experience to earn around that much.

Graphic Designers

A graphic designer will design images or a logo for a company to give the brand a visual representation. They could design logos for books and magazines, websites, computer games or product packaging. A graphic designer will have to work to a brief for what the client wants, they will work with an accounts manager or the accual client to see if they like it or if they want something to be changed, this might mean make many different logo.

Skills which are needed to be a graphic designer:

  • Must have a working knowledge for computer programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Indesign.
  • Follow a brief to a deadline for when a product needs to be completed for the client
  • Time management skills so you can juggle different design tasks at the same time.
  • Understand what the client want and asked for.
  • Designing new and creative ideas.
Graphic designers salary will decide on if the designer works for a graphic design firm or if they are self-employed or freelance. A graphic designer with limited experience who works or a firm will earn between £14 000 - £22 000, a senior levelled will earn £25 000 – £65 000, but creative directors can earn £65 000 +. 

Self employed or freelance designers with 5 –10 years of experience can earn between £4 000 – £6 000 a month but will work around 35 – 40 hours a week.

To become a graphic designer the qualification in which you may need are a foundation degree or a HND in media studies or graphic design. Although it is common to become a graphic designer without having qualifications all you need is to understand how to use the softwere and to have a good portfolio of you work.  

Film Editors

Film editor job is edit different shots of footage of the same scene, they will edit different versions of the the same scene to see which one works better with the film. A film editor will work every closely with the director during the post production and that is to get direction of the film right.

A film editor salary can depend on if you work free lance or for a film company. A editor with a bit of experience who works for a film company can earn between £18,000 -£25,000 but you much have experience as a runner and a assistant editor. A editor with experience will earn £20,00, - £35,000, and a film editor at senior level will earn to the higher end of scale earning up to £37,00 - £70,000.

A editor who works as a free lancer will get paid by a contract which can depend on how long the project is for, for example a film project will be longer than a longer than a documentary or a TV show. Financial

An accounts executive responsibility are handling client accounts up to 4 but in bigger agencies you one or two. Accounts executive will usually report to an accounts manager.

Managerial

The project manager job is to manage the project by make sure that everybody is doing their jobs right, by making deadlines which are met, manage a team of professionals, manage the budget and schedule. As the project manager the responsibility of the other team member are down to them such as the health and safety to completing the task to a deadline.
A managing director is someone who is responsible for the day to day operation on a film set or in a newspaper company. It is there job to manage things such as the staff, the customers, the budget and any other of the company’s assets.     

Editorial

A newspaper editor job contains commissioning article, decide which articles will be included in the publication, and decide what style the publication will be laid out in. You will have to work with other members of staff such as the sub-editor and designer to make sure you met a deadline. On some responsibility you might have are budget control and hiring staff.  
A script editors jobs includes finding new script writers, developing storyline ideas for future episodes and ensuring that scripts are suitable for production. A script writer will work very closely to the other writers to make sure that the script has action, dialogue, style and a good structer but before this they have to develope the script from a synopses, treatmant and then a rough draft.

Technical

The technical side of the media jobs are people who are part of the crew and the production side of films.

Such as the camera operator whose job it is to capture the footage for the film, the camera operator must different types of shots for one scene and that is so it will be easier to edit during the editing process. To be a good camera operator you much acquire some of the following skills such physical strength, communication skills, attention to detail and to combine creativity with techical skills.

A sound engineer works on the finished sound product by excluding loud background noise and static sounds. Also an engineer would also create soundtracks for games which could be character voices, gunshots and environment and ambient sound.
